– Regional Manager

A wholesale foodservice supply leader

The company in this case study is a members-only wholesale cash & carry foodservice supplier.  The company is a one-stop-shop for savings, selection and service, seven days a week.

The company has been supplying independent food businesses with quality products from large cash and carry warehouse stores since 1990. The company became the leading low-cost alternative to other foodservice suppliers by eliminating the overhead of a traditional distributor, focusing on the needs of independent foodservice operators and offering free membership.

Engaging with WorkStep

Historically, the company’s warehouse leadership team had not been able to find qualified applicants with warehouse and customer service experience. Not only was it frustrating to not find qualified people for openings, but it also led to increasing costs and lowered retention as they leaned on the temp-to-hire model to fill a majority of their openings.

WorkStep engaged with the NE Regional Manager, and his teams across multiple facilities to understand current staffing shortages, candidate preferences, and their facility’s interview process. Together, a strategy was created to locate candidates that have an ability to lead with warehouse and customer service experience for entry-level and managerial roles. WorkStep was able to provide qualified candidates daily that had desired experience with stable work history resulting in lowered time to fill for their openings. The platform’s ease of use made user adoption a breeze for the hiring managers who needed minimal time investment and no training. The best part is WorkStep placements led to a significant lift in retention, which has resulted in less time recruiting and lowered training costs.

Future plans

Now that the partnership between the two companies has been successful from coast to coast in 15 facilities there is an effort to deploy WorkStep nationwide to drive up retention, lower hiring costs, and simplify the hiring process.
